What if your old carpet could be turned into something new?

How Aquafil Turns Old Carpets Into Treasure

Carpet America Recovery Effort estimates 3.5 billion pounds of carpets are discarded in U.S. landfills each year. Most carpets are made primarily from finite resources in the form of oil-based plastics that could be recycled; however, only 5% of carpet waste is recycled in the U.S.

Aquafil is working to close the loop on carpet waste.

The four Aquafil Carpet Collection facilities located across the U.S. help divert 12,500 tons of carpet and carpet pads from Phoenix Valley and California landfills each year.

The recovered carpets are sent to the Aquafil Carpet Recycling facility where they are disassembled into three main components: Nylon 6, Polypropylene and Calcium Carbonate. The ECONYL® regeneration system uses the recovered Nylon 6 to create ECONYL® nylon. But what happens to the other components we recover?

Polypropylene, which is mainly used for carpet backing, can be reused in injection molding production, and the calcium carbonate used to stabilize the carpet is used for road construction and concrete.

Frequently Asked Questions
The key to sustainability starts from the Floor Up. For over ten years, Aquafil has been doing its part to divert carpet waste from landfills and repurpose it into new ingredients through the ECONYL® regeneration system. However, we need people like you to help spread awareness of the importance of carpet recycling.

With your help, we can close the loop on carpet manufacturing. Have a question about recycling carpet or the materials Aquafil collects? Check out our frequently asked questions to find an answer. If you still have questions, please contact us!

How can you get rid of leftover or old carpet?

Demoing an office building or renovating a home can create a lot of carpet waste. And unlike plastic bottles or aluminum cans, you can’t throw old carpet in a household recycling or garbage bin to be hauled away.

Aquafil Carpet Collection facilities make it easy to recycle old carpets. Instead of paying a fee to dump it at the landfill, you can drop off your old carpet at any Aquafil Carpet Collection facility to be recycled.

The Aquafil Carpet Collection facilities collect all types of carpet and carpet pad and use innovative technology to disassemble the carpet and recover as much Nylon 6 as possible. The Nylon 6 recovered from carpets can be repurposed along with other waste, like reclaimed fishing nets or textile scraps, to create ECONYL® nylon. Learn more about the ECONYL® regeneration process.

Where can I dispose old carpet?

Carpet is made from durable, resilient ingredients to withstand regular wear and tear. However, when it comes time to dispose of old carpet it's important to remember that carpet is not biodegradable.

When it comes time to swap out carpet, it is incredibly important to responsibly dispose of it to ensure it doesn’t end up sitting in a landfill for the next 100 years. Aquafil Carpet Collection facilities make it easy to responsibly dispose of old carpet and carpet pad.

Find a location near you.

Do you offer residential pick-ups?

At this time, we do not offer residential pick-ups.

Please bring your old carpet to an Aquafil Carpet Collection Facility near you to be responsibly disposed of.

When can I drop off old carpet?

Aquafil Carpet Collection facilities are open Monday – Friday, but hours depend on location.

Click on the location nearest you to view facility hours.

Do you charge a fee to dispose of carpet?

Carpets have multiple parts with different chemical makeups, requiring special processes to break them down and recycle the parts individually.

Because of this, we may charge a fee depending on the type of carpet you have. Please contact us so we can provide you with an estimate.

Do you collect other materials?

Aquafil Carpet Collection facilities collect all types of carpet and carpet pads.

We do not collect other materials.

Does Aquafil Carpet Collection do pick-ups for carpets and pads?

We do offer pick-ups for a fee!

Please call us to discuss your pick-up needs.

Can you donate carpet?

As with any donation, the carpet needs to be in good condition to donate.

At Aquafil Carpet Collection facilities, we analyze all carpet material that comes through the door. If it’s in good condition, we donate it to our local and national partners, like Habitat for Humanity, for reuse.

Is carpet recyclable?

Each year in the U.S., CARE estimates 3.5 billion pounds of carpet are discarded in landfills.

Most carpets are made primarily from finite resources in the form of oil-based plastics that could be recycled, yet only 5% of carpet waste is recycled.

Carpet recycling has traditionally been a challenge due to the many different materials used, along with designs that do not allow for easy separation. The establishment of the Aquafil Carpet Recycling facilities is just one step as Aquafil continues to invest in innovative solutions to repurpose waste.

What is the environmental impact of recycling carpets?

Each carpet recycling facility will have the capacity to collect and treat 36 million pounds of carpet per year, making a sizeable dent in the waste stream.

The goal is to recycle as much carpet waste as possible through carpet disassembly by establishing a number of these facilities throughout the U.S. Learn more about the environmental impact of recycling carpet here.

Why is carpet recycling important?

The current life cycle of carpet is detrimental to the environment. By recycling and repurposing the materials found in carpet, we can better protect the planet and work toward a circular economy where waste becomes new products. However, recycling carpet is not as easy as recycling water bottles and cardboard.

We need to not only develop the infrastructure to recycle carpets efficiently in the United States, we also need legislation and funding to make progress. There is an existing demand for more than 90% of the materials in recycled carpet, but the high cost of collecting, transporting and processing carpets for recycling is a deterrent.

California is currently the only state with a carpet stewardship program, which provides financial incentives for collectors and recyclers to recycle carpet. Through proper funding and legislation, California’s carpet recycling rate is more than four times the national average, increasing over 107% in the past five years.

How do we get more people to recycle carpet?

Unlike plastic bottles or aluminum cans, not many people know that carpet is in fact recyclable. Instead many often take their old carpets to the landfill as they think that is their only option.

At Aquafil, we are working with contractors, installers, architects and designers to educate the community on the possibilities of recycling carpet. Education is key to helping us close the loop on carpet manufacturing.

We can close the loop together.
