A Strong Collaboration to Clean Water from Abandoned Fish Farms

The Healthy Seas Foundation, which was born by the collaboration between Aquafil and other 2 partners, launched an extensive operation with Hyundai to reclaim waters from abandoned fish farms in Western Greece.

This initiative, which began with a ten-day intensive clean-up, marks the start of a year-long commitment to reclaim polluted and dangerous waters, promoting healthier marine environments for local communities and aquatic life.

A noble mission of cleanliness, education, and involvement to combat pollution from fish farms.

The initial operation successfully removed 42.7 tons of marine litter.
Large nets used in fish farming operations were collected (11.3 tonnes of the total) and found mainly entangled on the seabed, endangering fish and marine animals. Once cleaned and sorted, the nylon fishing nets were sent to Aquafil to be regenerated into new ECONYL® nylon.
Furthermore, surface structures such as rings or cages made of pipes and polystyrene, and various plastic waste were retrieved.

This mission is a collaborative effort between the Healthy Seas Foundation and Hyundai Motor Europe, supported by Aquafil and a diverse group of organizations and institutional partners. It highlights how collaboration is pivotal in fighting marine pollution and supporting local communities.
