“among-us” by Patricia Urquiola: A Visionary Installation Featuring ECONYL® Nylon at Heimtextil 2025
At Heimtextil 2025, internationally acclaimed architect and designer Patricia Urquiola unveiled “among-us,” an extraordinary installation that exemplifies how expertise in material development and visionary design can drive meaningful change.
Located in Hall 12.0, the 650 m² installation combines traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, integrating techniques like dhurrie weaving to explore the evolving role of textiles in retail and hospitality. Developed in collaboration with leading brands such as Kettal, Moroso, cc-tapis, Cimento®, Parà Tempotest, and Aquafil, “among-us” highlights the hybrid potentials of textile design, blending functionality, aesthetics, and responsible practices.
“Among-us” showcases Urquiola’s holistic approach to design, celebrating materiality and versatility. Urquiola explains: “The name among-us conveys a sense of conviviality and shared experiences – something that happens ‘between us’ or ‘in our midst’. It also alludes to a line of small fungus-like toy creatures.”
The installation’s grid-inspired floor references drafting software, serving as a canvas for abstract and organic forms. Sculptural textile elements, such as a sofa and upholstered artworks, invite tactile exploration. Screens embedded within the installation display virtual counterparts, encouraging interaction and blending physical and digital realms.
The installation offered an immersive experience, featuring double-sided hanging carpets made using ECONYL® regenerated nylon yarn, lounge islands with fabrics by Kvadrat, and bespoke seating solutions. A grid-like carpet defined the space, while sculptural textile forms encouraged visitors to touch, relax, and explore the interplay between materials and design.
This installation highlights the transformative potential of textiles, influencing design processes and redefining living spaces. Collaborations like this underscore the power of partnerships in advancing innovation and reimagining the future of textile design.
