This dual function makes FibrXL an important partner in Aquafil’s effort to build efficient take-back systems that return nylon waste to the ECONYL® regeneration cycle.
Why Reverse Logistics Matters in Circular Systems
Building circular value chains requires more than regenerated materials. An effective circular system depends on the ability to identify, collect and recover products once they reach the end of their useful life.
Over the years, Aquafil has built a significant reverse logistics framework developing a network of collaborations dedicated to recovering of nylon waste. Since the production of ECONYL® regenerated nylon relies on recovered waste rather than standard raw materials, effective collection and reverse logistics networks are fundamental of the circular model.
In the fishing industry, dedicated collection streams managed by selected reverse logistics partners have been in place for many years. These initiatives serve as successeful examples that open up new opportunities in other areas.
Today, Aquafil is developing a similar model for the ropes market through its collaboration with FibrXL. This partnership is a further step toward extending Aquafil’s reverse logistics framework and expanding circular model opportunities.
The R2R® Program: Closed-Loop Systems for Nylon Ropes
The R2R® (Born Regenerated to be Regenerable) program is a cornerstone of Aquafil’s strategy to move circularity from the ingredient to final products. Based on eco-design principles and life-cycle thinking, R2R® promotes products designed to be identified, collected and regenerated at the end of their useful life.
As official distributor of ECONYL® nylon for the ropes market and a key player in collecting end-of-life products, FibrXL supports and promotes the circular economy withing the outdoor sector.
How the Collaboration Works
FibrXL is an international supplier and distributor of high-performance fibers and yarns serving customers in more than 50 countries. The company provides high-tenacity fiber solutions used in a wide range of demanding applications, including ropes, cables, nets, slings systems and protective equipment.
Apart from distributing ECONYL® high-tenacity filament, FibrXL collects over 300 tons of waste materials per month to promote the circular economy [data supported by FibrXL documents].
The collaboration follows a circular model designed to keep nylon materials in use longer:
- Production: Aquafil produces ECONYL® regenerated nylon through its proprietary regeneration technology.
- Distribution: FibrXL distributes ECONYL® PA6 high tenacity yarns to manufacturers in the ropes market.
- Manufacturing: Rope manufacturers transform the material into finished products.
- Collection: FibrXL coordinates collection and reverse logistics for end-of-life ropes.
- Sorting: FibrXL partners with a local social association to clean and sort the ropes.
- Regeneration: Recovered nylon material goes into the ECONYL® Regeneration System to continue the circular model.
Aquafil’s regeneration technology recycles nylon 6 waste through a chemical process that returns the material to its original monomer.
