Co-founder of Healthy Seas Foundation
Aquafil’s collaboration with the Healthy Seas Foundation reflects a shared commitment to a more responsible approach to the environment.
In 2013, Aquafil joined other partners in founding the Healthy Seas Foundation, with the aim of addressing marine litter internationally, particularly abandoned and lost fishing gear.
According to FAO estimates, around 640,000 tonnes of fishing gear are lost or abandoned in seas and oceans every year. These nets can remain in the marine environment for many years, posing a serious threat to whales, turtles, fish and other marine species.
Since then, the Foundation has worked with volunteer divers, fishers, local communities and partners around the world to recover marine litter, protect marine ecosystems and raise public awareness.
Nylon fishing nets recovered during Healthy Seas’ activities are regenerated by Aquafil, together with other nylon waste, into ECONYL® regenerated nylon, while other types of plastic are reused or recycled.
Healthy Seas works with volunteer divers around the world to organise clean-up activities and collaborates with fishers to support marine litter prevention. The Foundation also promotes education and public engagement through school activities, workshops, events and digital initiatives.
