Co-founder of Healthy Seas Foundation
According to FAO, 640,000 tons of fishing gear are left or abandoned in the seas and oceans each year. The nets remain on the seabed for many years and pose a severe threat to marine animals like whales, turtles and fish.
To tackle the problem of sea pollution, in 2013 Aquafil co-founded “The Healthy Seas”, a foundation that spreads awareness on marine litter prevention and organizes cleanups with volunteer divers. The initiative was founded together with Star Sock and the NGO Ghost Diving with the purpose of cleaning the oceans and seas of marine litter such as derelict fishnets responsible for the needless death of marine animals.
The various nylon fishing nets collected by volunteers are regenerated, together with other nylon waste, into ECONYL® yarn while the different types of plastics are reused or recycled.
Healthy Seas works with many volunteer divers all around the world to organize cleanups, as well as with fishermen who are involved in their activities.
The Foundation also hosts educational discussions at schools to raise awareness of plastic pollution in our oceans, organizes web labs and welcomes all the partners who want to join this journey.
